Winner of Online Contest to Play in Pro-Am Announced

BMW of North America outlined two new initiatives to expand support of the Western Golf Association's Evans Scholars at today's Media Day for the BMW Championship, the third leg in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, September 3-9 at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club in Lemont, Illinois.

Tom Purves, Chairman and CEO of BMW (US) Holding Corp., introduced the first class of Evans Scholars-BMW Interns who are gaining experience for their post-university careers by working for BMW this summer. He also announced that BMW will fund a four-year Evans Scholarship in the name of any player to score a hole-in-one on Cog Hill's 14th hole during the BMW Championship, including any amateur or professional in the Pro-Am as well as in the name of any journalist who performs a similar feat on Media Day. When the BMW Championship was announced last year, the WGA and BMW confirmed that all proceeds from the BMW Championship will benefit the Evans Scholars program.

"One of the most rewarding aspects of teaming with the Western Golf Association to sponsor the BMW Championship is involvement with their Evans Scholars program. It recognizes and rewards both academic performance and strong character traits in young men and women who work as caddies at WGA clubs. BMW is proud to become part of the WGA's rich tournament tradition and salutes the 100,000 golfers, including 36,000 Par Club members, who annually contribute to the Evans Scholars," Purves stated.

Since its founding with two Northwestern University students in 1930, the Evans Scholars Foundation has provided more than 8,400 college scholarships to golf caddies. During the 2006-07 academic year, 823 caddies attended college on Evans Scholarships, valued at nearly $10 million. Over the course of the six-year partnership, BMW's involvement in the tournament is expected to double the amount raised for the Evans Scholars Foundation. Last year, for example, the Western Open raised more than $2 million for the Foundation.

The 2007 Evans Scholars-BMW Interns are:

* Kenny McCormick, a rising senior at Northwestern University. Kenny is working with BMW's MINI Division in the Central Region office in Schaumburg, Illinois, to develop and execute sponsorships and events.

* Josh Gonzales, a rising sophomore at the University of Missouri, who is with BMW of North America's Engineering department at the company's Woodcliff Lake, NJ headquarters. Josh is providing support on product testing and development benchmark and market analysis.

* Matt Stumpf, a rising senior at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who is also with BMW of North America's Central Region in Schaumburg. Matt is assisting with event planning for the BMW Championship. He is also shadowing personnel at several Chicago area dealerships to gain insight into the inner workings of BMW retail centers.

"The automobile industry, including our franchised dealers, offers great career opportunities. BMW is leveraging its association with the Evans Scholars to give our interns an opportunity to explore some of these opportunities in person," Purves stated. Purves predicted that the number of Evans Scholars-BMW Interns will increase in future years based on the company's experience with the first class.

John Kaczkowski, Western Golf Association Tournament Director, noted "when we first started talking with BMW a year ago, they said the WGA would receive full support for the Evans Scholars program. BMW delivered on that commitment even before the first shot of the BMW Championship has been taken. BMW respects the traditions of the WGA and is a real partner in furthering our work."

BMW will also involve its owners in creative ways in the BMW Championship.

Purves also announced the winners of a unique online contest, dubbed "The Ultimate Foursome," in which owners were asked to submit essays via www.bmwusa.com describing which professional player they would most like to team with and why. The winner -- 71 year-old Gary Zimmerman from Hartland, Wisconsin -- will be awarded the first pick in the Pro-Am draw as well as a trip for two to the BMW Championship with hotel accommodations and VIP access to tournament events. The winner was chosen based on criteria such as creativity, originality and sincerity.

BMW owners who purchase tickets to the BMW Championship will also be granted exclusive access to a viewing pavilion overlooking the 14th green by simply showing their vehicle key. The BMW Owners Pavilion will be open from Thursday through Sunday.

Additionally, the general public will have an opportunity for unparalleled access to the BMW Championship through "Drive Like an Owner" - a contest BMW is conducting via www.bmwusa.com to give a non-owner a chance to win a place in the BMW Championship Pro-Am. Contestants are asked to submit an essay explaining their Ultimate Drive on and off the course. The winner will receive a trip for two to the BMW Championship with hotel accommodations, a playing spot in the Pro-Am and VIP access to events throughout the week. Essays will be accepted online through August 3.

Cutting edge “cross-wheel-drive” system offers class-leading performance and control

2008 Saab 9-3
New 2008 Saab 9-3

Saab introduces a new, innovative all-wheel-drive system (Saab XWD - 'cross wheel drive') available on the 9-3 Sport Sedan and SportCombi Aero models. The Saab XWD system is designed to optimize handling and stability in all driving conditions and will be available beginning in early 2008. Additionally, the full Saab 9-3 model range features bold new design and styling inspired by Saab’s award-winning Aero X concept car.

Combined with an uprated 280 hp (206 kW), 2.8 V6 turbo engine which delivers almost 15% more torque (400 Nm), the Saab XWD system is available with a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

Saab XWD

Saab’s XWD is a fully automatic, on-demand all-wheel-drive system capable of sending up to 100% of engine torque to the front or rear wheels and variable torque transfer between the rear wheels while featuring innovative developments in wheel slip management and, as an option, the use of an electronically-controlled rear limited-slip differential. The Saab XWD system improves on current technology by providing maximum traction immediately at take-off, for smooth, strong acceleration, eliminating the initial hesitation experienced in typical AWD systems.

On the open road, drive torque is seamlessly and continuously varied between the axles. When cornering, Saab XWD provides enhanced and more finely balanced chassis dynamics. The system is capable of applying rear drive, as needed, to balance oversteer and understeer characteristics, improving stability and road-holding. In highway cruising conditions, when traction or optimum grip is not an issue, only 5% to 10% of engine torque is typically transmitted to the rear wheels. This helps provide greater stability and fuel efficiency.

Saab XWD also features a segment-first application of an electronically-controlled, rear limited slip differential (eLSD). In icy or wet split-friction conditions it can transfer up to 40% of torque between the drive shafts, to whichever wheel has more grip. The eLSD also gives the driver enhanced control in cornering or lane change maneuvers by momentarily applying more or less torque to either of the rear wheels to help the rear of the car more closely follow the direction of the front wheels. This yaw damping effect keeps the car better balanced and more tightly controlled.

2008 Saab 9-3
2008 Saab 9-3 range

The distinctively re-designed Saab 9-3 range, expected at North American dealerships in early September 2007, features frontal styling inspired by Saab’s award-winning Aero X concept car and a higher level of standard content. Designed to reinforce the range’s sporty appeal, the styling strategy brings together contemporary and classic Saab design themes in a progressive, modern expression of the brand’s distinctive character.

The new Saab 9-3 range is visually distinguished by all-new bodywork forward of the A-pillar, with new bumpers and light assemblies front and rear as well as new doors and handles for the Sport Sedan and SportCombi. Flared side sill extensions become standard across the range. All these elements combine to give the car a clearer Saab identity and a bolder, more assertive stance. On the Sport Sedan, for example, 70 percent of the external body panels and parts are all-new.

The deeper, more prominent evolution of the Saab grille is complemented by all-new headlamp lenses and light units that now incorporate a thin ‘eyebrow’ lighting zone designed as a brand specific ‘signature’ feature. These wraparound units culminate in an upswept rear edge, introducing a Saab design theme from the 9-5 range and classic 900 model. The grille’s central wing motif, referencing Saab’s aircraft heritage, is, of course, retained.

The new look sees the adoption of another Saab signature feature: a ‘clamshell’ hood, closing across the top of the front fenders. The hood pressing incorporates a sweeping, U-shaped styling line, which echoes the curvature of the windshield. The swept-back frontal lines are complemented by a front bumper and splitter assembly with a deep, trapezoidal air intake, even more pronounced on Aero versions. This is flanked by deep black vents which are framed, like the grille, in a matte chrome finish.

At the rear, all new Saab 9-3 models now feature smoked white light clusters. The new bumpers are much deeper with curved, uninterrupted surfaces. The trunk lids of the Sport Sedan and Convertible are also altered to accommodate a new matte chrome lift handle trim with an integrated badge, similar to that on the SportCombi.

Other external enhancements include the introduction of flat wiper blades, for reduced wind noise, and new alloy wheels. Two new colors are added to the range, including a Snow Silver metallic paint finish similar to that seen on the Aero X. In addition to the already high-level of standard equipment, Saab adds OnStar, XM Radio, rain-sensing wipers, tire pressure monitor, ‘quiet package’ to reduce road noise and remote open for the convertible top for the 2008 model year.

The Saab 9-3 2.0T Sport Sedan, a three-year running (2005, 2006, 2007) Insurance Institute for Highway Safety top safety pick, is competitively priced at $28,385, while the Aero V6 model takes off at $35,365. Drivers attracted to the best-in-class capacity options of the SportCombi can get into a 2.0T or Aero V6 SportCombi priced at $29,630 and $36,265 respectively. The Saab 9-3 2.0T or Aero Convertible, which was named a top safety pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in 2007, is priced at $39,710 and $45,665 respectively.

The Saab 9-5 range begins at $37,205 for the sedan, and $38,300 for the Aero Sedan. The Saab 9-5 SportCombi provides cargo diversity starting at $38,455 and $39,550 for the Aero variant. The Saab 9-7X 4.2i and the Saab 9-7X 5.3i V8 are attractively priced at $39,935 and $42,035 respectively.

Saab is a division of General Motors Corp. Saab Automobile USA is the importer and/or distributor of Saab 9-3, Saab 9-5 and Saab 9-7X automobiles for Saab Automobile AB, Sweden. In 2007, Saab celebrates 60 years since first being introduced to the automotive scene as the vision-turned-reality of 16 aircraft engineers.

Mitsubishi Motors' Revenue Up / Operating and Ordinary Income Move into Black

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) today announced its sales and financial results for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2008.

1. Performance overview
Mitsubishi Motors reports that consolidated net sales in the first quarter of fiscal 2007 (April 1 through June 30, 2007) increased by 146.9 billion yen to 630.8 billion yen - a 30%-plus increase over the same period last fiscal year (483.9 billion yen). The gain stems principally from the increased revenue coming from higher sales volume and from favorable yen exchange rates.

Operating and ordinary income were both in the black. Mitsubishi Motors posted an operating profit of 6.0 billion yen, an improvement of 12.8 billion yen from the same period last fiscal year. Factors contributing to this improvement include increased volume and favorable changes in the model mix, and the weaker yen which offset higher marketing and overhead costs due to increased advertising and publicity outlays in North America related to new-vehicle introduction. The company posted an ordinary profit of 2.6 billion yen, a year-on-year gain of 14.8 billion yen.

Mitsubishi Motors reported a net loss of 8.2 billion yen for the period, a year-on-year improvement of 6.9 billion yen. This gain was made despite the company booking a one-time charge for reorganization costs stemming from the integration of its domestic consolidated sales companies that was completed on July 1, 2007 and despite an increase in income taxes.

2. Sales Volume
Global retail market unit sales of vehicles in the first quarter of fiscal 2007 totaled 334,000 vehicles, a 14% increase of 41,000 on the 293,000 sold in the same period in fiscal 2006.

In Japan MMC sold 46,000 vehicles, an 11% drop of 6,000 compared to the same period last year. In a domestic market that continues to fail to show signs of recovery, the increase in registered vehicle sales sparked by the introduction of the Mitsubishi Delica D:5 was not sufficient to offset a decline in minicar sales.

In North America, the company sold 52,000 vehicles, a 22% increase of 10,000 over the same period last year. The increase was driven principally the launch of the new Mitsubishi Lancer which had its global launch in the region in March 2007, following the Mitsubishi Outlander SUV launched in November 2006.

In Europe, Mitsubishi Motors sold 80,000 vehicles, a 12% increase of 9,000 driven by continued robust sales in Russia and a doubling of sales in the Ukraine.

In Asia and other regions, MMC sold 156,000 vehicles, a 22% increase of 28,000 over the same period last fiscal year. This growth stemmed from reasons including: higher unit sales of Mitsubishi brand models in China; the market recovery in Indonesia and other nations in the ASEAN block; and continued firm sales in Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

3. FY2007 forecasts
Mitsubishi Motors leaves the fiscal 2007 first-half and full-year forecasts announced on April 26, 2007 unchanged at this time.

Johnson Controls concept car
Johnson Controls presents a new concept car that emphasizes its understanding of the market and consumers and stands for product innovations and sustainability. Photo: Johnson Controls

At this year's International Motor Show (IAA), Johnson Controls (NYSE:JCI), one of the world's leading suppliers of automotive interiors, electronics and batteries, will present its new corporate identity, a number of innovations and a new concept car that emphasizes its understanding of the market and consumers and stands for product innovations and sustaina-bility. Flexibility, novel ways of using space and a high level of user friendliness were of the utmost priority for the design engineers. Another premiere is an innovative driver information concept. In addition, the company is presenting new materials and hybrid batteries. The highlight at the IAA will be the company's press conference on 12 September at 11 a.m. in Hall 5.1, booth B16.

Johnson Controls has started to realign itself as a multi-industry company. The aim is to enhance its use of synergies between Automotive Experience, Building Efficiency and Power Solutions. The company will present its new corporate identity for the first time at the IAA, supported by a new vision. "We develop solutions that are more comfortable, safer and more sustainable," said Han Hendriks, Vice President of Industrial Design, Marketing, Communications and Advanced Sales Europe at Johnson Controls. "Our new slogan 'Ingenuity Welcome' represents this way of thinking. We aim to face the day-to-day challenges of our industry with a wealth of ideas." Often, just a small, unspectacular idea can develop into particularly creative and original solutions and lead to products that consumers want. The products to be premiered at the IAA already reflect this: For example, the interior concept is also characterized by smart solutions.

Innovative use of space in concept car

The alignment of the interior to the needs of the driver played a particularly important role here: The area behind the first row of seats is designed for individual use, offers storage space and creates a new feeling of spaciousness. This is made possible by the Slim Seat, which has a unique slim backrest and yet is just as safe and comfortable as conventional seats. In addition, the second row of seats also plays a part: In its normal position it is invisible so that the free space can be used for storage. If necessary, the rear seat row folds out for two passengers at the touch of a button. This is enabled by the Mechatronic Release mechanism rather than by motors. Furthermore, a special tech-nology allows the seats to provide contour and side support in their upright position, while the side bolsters are pulled into the backrest when stowed, thus reducing height. New seat foam in the rear and front seats reduces vibration and provides long-lasting comfort.

Both comfort and ergonomics continue to be of the essence: Electronic innovations for enhanced ergonomics and comfort

A hybrid cluster optimizes the interface between humans and machines, meaning less time is needed for processing infor-mation which diverts drivers' attention. This is achieved by using superimposed digital information which is linked up to an analog instrument cluster. To the right and left of the instrument cluster are two smaller segmented displays which enable the representation of different information. The information views change as the displays are shifted upwards or downwards.

A new, highly convenient interface solution links mobile devices to the vehicle. It allows, for example, mobile communication units and navigation systems as well as MP3 players to communicate with the vehicle. The advantage is that the driver no longer needs to operate the small buttons of the mobile devices since they can be controlled via voice, the multi-controller or operating controls in the steering wheel. The infor-mation can then be easily read from the display in the instru-ment cluster or instrument panel. The external devices are stowed out of sight and connected to the vehicle in a separate compartment in the armrest.

New processes for better surfaces

The armrests and the seats are fitted with soft nubuck leather. All other surfaces were manufactured using new processes: Johnson Controls used the two-color RIM alpha process to manufacture the instrument panel. The advantage of this process is that wall thickness can be controlled, making it particularly suitable for airbag integration. The new PP Thin Film technology was used to create the other surfaces, offering a high quality look for all products in the vehicle interior.

Environmental protection a top priority

The focus is on environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions. For example, a plug-in hybrid battery in the trunk of the concept car provides for low-emission operation making it less dependent on crude-oil-based resources. It is not only the battery, however, that is based on an environmentally friendly approach: The company set great store by the fact that the concept car already fulfills the requirements of the 2015 ELV directive that stipulates 95 percent recyclability.

On their tour of the booth, visitors will find further environmen-tally friendly products and concepts: Drawing on its experience in the processing of natural fibers, the company has developed new substrate materials. Unlike conventional plastic substrates, which are based on crude oil, these new materials are made up of plastics based on renewable raw materials. The company will also be presenting lightweight front seat structures that reduce the weight of seating systems. Hybrid structures made of aluminum and steel are combined using special welding processes.

"We are proud to present a concept car this year. This not only shows our potential in integrated interiors, it is also the result of our global cooperation," says Han Hendriks. The interior con-cept was developed based on the interdisciplinary cooperation of global teams. For example, employees in the USA developed and manufactured the center console and the battery.

Most of the solutions that will be presented at the IAA are already available for integration into the next vehicle generation.

ZAP XEBRA
Electric car manufacturer ZAP reported that its XEBRA traveled over 100 miles on a single charge at a Danish test facility using an advanced lithium battery system. Lithium Balance of Copenhagen believes ZAP XEBRA trucks like the one seen here in Richmond, California will be available with the new batteries in the very near future. (PRNewsFoto/ZAP)

Electric car pioneer ZAP (BULLETIN BOARD: ZAAP) confirmed that its XEBRA city-truck traveled over 100 miles on a single charge at a Danish laboratory using an advanced lithium battery system.

ZAP has two XEBRAs in Denmark undergoing refinement with new lithium batteries and an advanced battery management system developed by Danish technology firm Lithium Balance. In January, ZAP signed an exclusive distribution agreement for the sophisticated battery management system. This new system helps maximize the efficiency and performance of lithium batteries, delivering as much as five times the range over the lead-acid batteries currently used in a wide variety of electric vehicles.

"The XEBRA seems like the perfect vehicle to test our advanced battery management system and the results are extremely encouraging," said Ivan Loncarevic of Lithium Balance. "We believe that, combined with our battery management system, ZAP will be able to offer a commercial version of a XEBRA that has a range in excess of 100 miles per charge in the very near future."

Loncarevic accompanied ZAP CEO Steve Schneider on a recent cross-country trip through China to visit ZAP's various manufacturing partners, including lithium battery developer and manufacturer Advanced Battery Technologies, Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: ABAT) . Earlier this week, ZAP agreed to purchase $5.168 million of polymer and nano batteries from Advanced Battery Technologies for use in the XEBRA as well as other ZAP vehicles and battery systems.

Loncarevic added: "After working with ZAP for several months now, I believe this to be one of the few ventures today that has a serious near-term business plan to mass produce electric vehicles. The XEBRA is the perfect entry and test-bed for this new battery technology and will pave the way for the development of ZAP's highway capable electric vehicles."

ZAP recently announced that it had delivered over 500 of its XEBRA sedans and trucks, which are available through its network of authorized dealers and service centers.

About ZAP

ZAP has been a leader in advanced transportation technologies since 1994, delivering over 100,000 vehicles to consumers in more than 75 countries. At the forefront of fuel-efficient transportation with new technologies including energy efficient gas systems, hydrogen, electric, fuel cell, ethanol, hybrid and other innovative power systems, ZAP is developing a high-performance crossover SUV electric car concept called ZAP-X engineered by Lotus Engineering. Edge’s available intelligent all-wheel-drive (AWD) system was tuned with an emphasis on performance while offering confident all-weather driving. By constantly monitoring and predicting traction, the system delivers torque to all four wheels, even before the wheels begin to slip. An active on-demand coupler can deliver the precise amount of torque to the rear wheels. Paired with available AdvanceTrac® traction control, intelligent AWD can transfer torque front to rear and side to side.

Impressive Interior Quietness
Edge’s well-rounded, modern performance extends to impressive refinement, enhancing the driving experience. In fact, testing has proven that the Edge’s interior is quieter than the Lexus RX350.

Engineers spent hundreds of hours fine-tuning Edge’s interior ambiance when the vehicle launched. For example, the side mirrors were specifically designed to reduce wind noise. Even the radio antenna was scrutinized. By modifying the pitch and height of the spiral by tenths of a millimeter, wind noise was reduced by as much as 2 decibels.

Modern Design with a Dramatic Edge
The Edge’s bold American design is defined by its distinctive three-bar chromed grille. An aggressively raked windshield and fast-sloping back window with high-mounted rear spoiler accentuate the feeling of motion. Quad-beam headlamps and a “powerdome” hood accentuate the purposeful front-end look.

The wheels are pushed to the corners, giving Edge its powerful, yet graceful stance. The raised beltline emphasizes strong, sculpted shoulders formed around sharp wheel arches. Matte black lower front and rear fascias and side rocker panels emphasize Edge’s sporty character.

Edge’s modern design flows into the interior, evident in the instrument panel and distinctive center stack. The center stack design incorporates two, 9-inch by 2-inch vertical vents that bracket the audio and climate-control switches. Available all-leather seating surfaces feature contrast stitching inspired by the fashion industry.

Adaptable, Flexible Design
Edge is designed to fit the customer’s need for style as well as cargo space and adaptability. The Ford Escape, one of America’s best-selling small utility vehicles, is completely redesigned inside and out for 2008. Escape now makes a more powerful statement with a bolder, more rugged exterior design that bears a stronger family resemblance to the Ford Explorer and Ford Expedition.

The all-new interior resets the bar for small utility vehicles with more upscale appointments, new innovative storage options and improved comfort and quietness. Meanwhile, chassis refinements
deliver impressive fuel economy and agile driving dynamics that belie the Escape’s rugged exterior.

The Ford Escape helped ignite consumer demand for more fuel-efficient small-utility vehicles, which almost doubled the small-utility market from 800,000 units in 2000 to an estimated 1.5 million in 2006.

The combination of traditional SUV capability and crossover construction made the original Escape an instant success. More than one million Escapes have been sold since its introduction as a 2001 model – more than any other small utility vehicle or crossover of any size. Six years later, Escape remains among the sales leaders of the small-utility segment, a remarkable feat considering the increased segment volume.

Bold, American design ties to Ford Tough Truck heritage
The 2008 Ford Escape features an all-new exterior that has been sculpted into a bolder, tougher look that strengthens the family resemblance to Explorer and Expedition. New exterior design details include:

* A high beltline that gives a strong, modern proportion of sheetmetal to glass.
* Blacked-out B-pillars, integrated running boards, clean side surfaces and available 17-inch wheels all further emphasize the high beltline.
* A raised hood design hood features a unique “reverse crease” that draws the eye to the detailed surface.
* New front fascia has headlamps that sweep up toward the front corners of the vehicle to short side marker lamps.
* New headlights bracket a dramatic front fascia and new grille, which is available in three variations designed for specific trim levels.
* New taillamps feature a clear band that wraps around the edge of the vehicle, a design touch that visually connects the profile to the rear.
* A step pad on the rear bumper, new for 2008, gives owners a secure place to stand when loading bikes, boats and gear on top of the vehicle.

Industry-first 100 Percent Recycled Seating Surfaces
The 2008 Ford Escape is believed to be the first U.S. automotive application of 100 percent recycled fabric seating surfaces. The new fabric, supplied by Interface Fabrics, Inc., is produced from 100 percent post-industrial waste – defined as anything intended for retail use that never makes it to the consumer. This can be anything from plastic intended for pop bottles to un-dyed polyester fibers.

This plastic and polyester is processed, spun into yarn, dyed and woven into Seat fabric. Recycling waste otherwise intended for landfills has obvious environmental benefits. Interface Fabrics estimates that Ford’s use of post-industrial recycled materials, rather than virgin fibers, could conserve an estimated 600,000 gallons of water, 1.8 million pounds of carbon dioxide equivalents and more than 7 million kilowatt hours of electricity.

Upscale Interior Appointments, Flexible Storage Space
In addition to the industry’s first recycled seating surfaces, the 2008 Ford Escape features a host of interior innovations that will eventually cascade to other Ford vehicles.

The Escape features Ford’s first use of a “top of dash” display positioned at eye level on the dashboard, which shows ambient temperature, radio functions and climate-control readouts. This simple, efficient design puts much of the vehicle’s information in one place at the top of the dashboard, making it easier to reference when driving.

Also improving ease-of-use is the clean, uncluttered center console. Rather than the traditional “brick” design for the radio and heating/air conditioning controls, Escape features dials and buttons that “poke-through” the center console. The instrument panel houses audio and climate controls, a standard MP3/iPod jack, and controls for available heated seats and in-dash navigation system.

Escape also features the first use of Ford’s new, signature Ice Blue interior lighting. The cool blue lighting replaces the traditional green on the instrument cluster, the center console, the redundant controls on the steering wheel and the door lock and window switches. Ice Blue presents a cool, crisp, easy-on-the-eyes light for night driving and enhances the overall feel of the interior.

A host of other innovative features elevate the sophistication inside Escape.

* A new floor-mounted shifter, for example, allowed engineers to remove the emergency brake handle from the center console, freeing up room between the seats. The emergency brake is now engaged with a floor-mounted pedal and released with a handle on the dashboard.
* Thoughtfully sculpted door panels create more elbowroom; audio speakers sit higher in the front doors for better sound clarity; and the rear doors have new storage bins.

Escape’s center console boasts best-in-class storage volume with space for a laptop computer. Two innovative storage bins fit snugly inside the center console, or can be removed and hung on dovetail mounting points on the front passenger side and rear of the console for additional storage.

Electric Power Assist Steering Highlights Improved Ride and Handling
The 2008 Ford Escape is one of the first Ford Motor Company vehicles to use speed-sensitive Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS), a sophisticated system that helps correct for road irregularities and improves overall steering feel.

Conventional power steering systems use an engine-driven hydraulic gear, which saps power and efficiency from the engine. The 2008 Escape’s new EPAS system uses an electric motor rather than the engine’s accessory drive. This new system eliminates the hydraulic noises typical of conventional hydraulic power-assisted steering systems and improves fuel economy as well. Thanks in part to the new EPAS system, gas Escape models achieve up to an 8 percent improvement in fuel economy over the previous model.

Because there are no hydraulic lines or fluid, maintenance costs over the life of the vehicle are reduced, as well.

For 2008, Escape’s car-like driving dynamics are further improved by reducing rear spring rates and increasing the front stabilizer bar from 20 to 21 mm. Models with 17-inch wheels get unique rear dampers and a 22 mm front stabilizer bar.

Gasoline-powered Escapes come with an all-new 10-inch front disc/rear drum braking system vthat is more durable, quieter and emits less dust. The 2008 Escape Hybrid continues with regenerative four-wheel disc brakes.

Focusing on NVH refinements delivers a quiet, car-like ride
Engineers made a host of changes to the 2008 Escape to reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels inside the vehicle. For example, new recessed channels in the vehicle’s roof panel are designed to improve air flow over the top of the vehicle.

To achieve lower NVH levels, a new acoustic laminate is sandwiched between two glass panels in the windshield. An acoustic headliner and a new interior carpet with a 50 percent increase in thickness over half the area and a 25 percent increase in volume does a much better job of isolating noise.

The 2008 Escape features a long list of additional NVH enhancements, including:

* Increased side glass thickness from 3.8 to 4.7 mm helps prevent outside noise from entering the passenger cabin.
* The transversely mounted V-6 engine’s alternator is relocated from the right side to the left side of the engine, moving it farther away from the passenger compartment.
* A new, quieter cooling fan reduces idle noise.
* All-wheel-drive models have a new rear differential that is quieter and smoother operating.
* New windshield molding and low profile wipers help improve air flow around the vehicle, reducing wind noise.
* Larger outside mirrors are carefully designed to minimize wind noise.
* Additional sound package material has been added throughout the vehicle to reduce interior noise.

Compared with the previous model, the 2008 Escape is 12 percent quieter on the highway and 20 percent quieter in high velocity cross winds.

Powertrain and chassis refinements reinforce Escape’s car-like ride
Escape’s unibody construction and four-wheel independent suspension contribute to its car-like ride and handling. This responsive architecture provides precise steering and handling by giving each wheel the ability to react separately to road imperfections, while the lower stance makes ingress and egress easier.

Escape comes standard with front-wheel drive. Escape’s available Intelligent all-wheel-drive (AWD) system was tuned with an emphasis toward driving performance while offering confident all-weather driving. Using a preemptive slip strategy, the system continuously monitors vehicle speed, throttle input and steering angle to seamlessly deliver torque to the appropriate wheel even before wheel slippage occurs. The system also helps eliminate torque steer and helps balance the vehicle when cornering. Intelligent AWD uses an active on-demand coupler to allocate a precise amount of torque from front to rear or side to side, with up to 100 percent of the torque going to either axle.

The 2008 Escape’s standard 2.3-liter, 16-valve Duratec 23 I-4 produces 153 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 152 pound-feet of torque at 4,250 rpm and comes with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. An available 3.0-liter, 24-valve V-6 Duratec 30 engine makes 200 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 193 pound-feet of torque at 4,850 rpm mated to a 4-speed automatic.

Escape bolsters its safety leadership with a host of standard safety features
Under its skin, Escape has one of the most advanced safety packages in the small SUV segment. The 2008 Escape has an entirely revised restraint system that consists of new air bags, safety belts, steering column and a new steering wheel. Standard safety content includes:

* AdvanceTrac® with RSC® (Roll Stability Control). This Ford-exclusive system can predict a vehicle’s path, using a sensor to measure oversteer and yaw by monitoring the vehicle’s speed, throttle position and steering wheel angle. When the system senses wheel slip or the loss of traction, it applies braking where needed to keep the vehicle safely on its intended path.
* Ford’s Safety Canopy™ side air curtains deploy in certain side-impact collisions, or in the event of an impending rollover, helping to protect front- and second-row outboard occupants. The curtains remain inflated for several seconds after deployment to enhance protection during an extended crash event. The system features “roll-fold” technology that’s designed to slide the air bag between the glass and occupants as it inflates if occupants are improperly seated or resting their heads against a window.
* Seat-mounted side air bags deploy out of the upper portion of the front seats to protect the driver and front Seat passenger’s upper and lower torso.
* Escape uses occupant friendly door trims with softened armrests, side impact foam bolsters and intrusion door beams to distribute the loading during an impact to the hinge and B pillars.

Ford’s exclusive Sync hands-free in-car communications and entertainment system will be available late in the model year. Ford Sync allows seamless integration of mobile phones and handheld media players via Bluetooth technology and USB connectivity. Voice activation is added to Sport Trac’s available navigation system for 2008 as well.

Explorer Sport Trac is available in two series, XLT and Limited. Sport Trac is produced at the Louisville Assembly Plant in Louisville, Ky.

Tough Truck Inspired Design and Equipment
Sport Trac offers an overt nod to its inspiration with a tough truck exterior drawn from the design of the Ford Explorer and Ford F-150. Specific elements of the tough exterior are:
- The standard chrome-finished grille for a bold front end.
- A powerdome aluminum hood for a stronger appearance.
- Pronounced wheel arches, helping to provide a rugged stance.
- The C-pillar arch serves as visual distinction between people space and cargo room.
- A hardy 4.5-foot cargo box lined with corrosion-proof sheet molded composite (SMC) material and lined with dent-proof and scratch-resistant material for protection from hard use.
- Three integrated cargo bins are recessed into the bed of the truck for versatile, convenient storage.
- The cargo cage bed extender and Tonneau cover, which remain highly popular with customers.

A safe, comfortable interior fulfills the goal to create a passenger-friendly and truly capable truck/SUV hybrid. The ‘sport’ interior includes:

- Sport-designed Seat styles and Tuflor? rubber floor coverings for tough utility and easy maintenance.
- A class-exclusive heated windshield adds convenience in cold weather conditions.
- Five-passenger seating benefits from significant engineering, resulting in a quieter, more comfortable cabin.
- The standard audio system features a CD player with MP3 compatibility, and can be upgraded to the available six-disc, in-dash CD player with powered subwoofer.
- Integrated SIRIUS Satellite Radio also is available.

Capable Power and Performance
The Explorer Sport Trac is outfitted standard with the 4.0-liter V-6 engine and 5-speed automatic transmission. The available, class-exclusive, 4.6-liter V-8 engine with 6-speed automatic transmission provides a power boost attractive to many customers.

Key considerations for Sport Trac’s powertrain options are:

- The 4.0-liter V-6 is rated at 210 horsepower at 5,100 rpm and 254 pound-feet of torque at 3,700 rpm.
- The 4.0-liter, equipped with a standard 5-speed automatic, delivers a maximum 5,310 pounds of towing capacity and 1,450 pounds of payload.
- The V-6 meets federal Tier II, Bin 4 tailpipe emissions.
- The 4.6-liter, 3-valve V-8 delivers 292 horsepower – the most horsepower in its class.
- The available 4.6-liter V-8 and 6-speed transmission deliver a maximum 6,800 pounds of towing capacity and 1,390 pounds of payload.
- The V-8 meets federal Tier II Bin 5 standards, which is compliant with California’s Low Emissions Vehicle II (LEV II) standards.

Either engine can be equipped with the Sport Trac’s advanced Control Trac® four-wheel-drive system. Unlike less sophisticated systems, Control Trac® automatically transfers torque to the front wheels as needed to maintain maximum traction at all times. This increases safety and security without compromising fuel economy or NVH. In addition, the Control Trac® system features a torque-multiplying gear set (4x4 Low) in the transfer case for off-road applications that require extra power including deep sand, steep grades and towing a boat trailer out of water.

The Sport Trac’s front suspension is a short- and long-arm design with coil-over shocks. The rear suspension is independent with a patent-pending, trailing blade design.

Sizable four-wheel disc brakes are standard, as is the four-wheel, four-channel anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution. The package creates a balanced chassis with ride and handling that is unrivaled in its segment.

Standard Safety
Of particular interest for 2008 is the standardization of the Safety Canopy? side curtain air bags in the Explorer Sport Trac. The Safety Canopy? side curtain air bags join a host of already standard safety equipment, such as:

- AdvanceTrac? with industry-exclusive RSC® (Roll Stability Control)
- Advanced restraints module and dual front-crash sensors
- Five-level front-passenger sensing system
- Driver-seat position sensor
- Dual-stage front air bags
- Adaptive load-limiting safety-belt retractors
- Adaptive front-passenger-seat air-bag tether
- Adaptive air bag venting
- Adaptive-stroking steering column.

Key features and options:

Standard features include: Advance Trac® with RSC®; 4-wheel-disc brakes with ABS; Enhanced Interactive Vehicle Dynamics (IVD); 16-inch painted, cast-aluminum wheels; Cargo bed storage system; Fog lamps; Privacy glass; Power rear sliding window; Power one touch up/down driver window (late availability); Air conditioning; AM/FM single CD/MP3 player with audio input jack; Overhead console; Heavy duty floor mats; Illuminated glove box; Leather wrapped steering wheel; Two power points inside, one in the cargo bed; Leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel; Belt-Minder®; LATCH; Remote keyless entry; SecuriLock® passive anti-theft system; Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Optional features include: 17-inch cast-aluminum wheels; 18-inch machined-aluminum wheels; 18-inch chrome-clad wheels; Control Trac® 4WD; Audiophile AM/FM in-dash, six-CD/MP3 player with subwoofer and audio input jack; Voice-activated navigation system; Rear-seat DVD system; Leather-trimmed, two-tone front sport buckets with two-way adjustable headrests; Ten-way power driver and four-way manual passenger seats with recline and manual lumbar; Rear 60/40 split bench with two-way head restraints, integrated Seat restraints for middle occupant; Power Code remote start; Premium carpeted floor mats; Adjustable pedals; Cargo cage and bed extender; Cross bars for roof rails; Heated windshield; Power moonroof; Reverse Sensing System; Daytime running lights.

A factory-prepared 2008 Honda Civic Mugen Si Sedan will debut in mid-October, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today.

The Honda Civic Mugen Si Sedan is equipped with a high-performance suspension, forged aluminum wheels, aerodynamic body styling and a sport-tuned exhaust system.

"Honda enthusiasts have long been asking for factory-installed Mugen performance products similar to what the company offers in Japan," said John Mendel, executive vice president of
American Honda. "We're enthusiasts, too, and the ultra-premium Civic Mugen Si Sedan offers exclusive style and elevated handling performance with legendary Honda refinement."

The track-tuned suspension, tested at the Twin Ring Motegi racing circuit in Japan, lowers the vehicle by 0.6 inches with aggressive spring and damper tuning for enhanced handling performance while still maintaining a high level of ride comfort. Compared to the conventional Civic Si Sedan, front and rear damping force (both bump and rebound) was increased between 8- and 24-percent. Lightweight 16.98-pound 18x7.5-inch forged aluminum wheels (27 percent lighter than the stock 17x7 alloy wheel) and high-grip BFGoodrich® g-Force KDW 215/40ZR18 summer tires help to create MUGEN's unique, rewarding and well-balanced handling performance character. The full-vehicle aero-package adds a front spoiler with a sports grille, side spoilers, a rear bumper diffuser and a rear wing.

The sport exhaust system reduces back pressure from the catalytic converter back. The Honda Civic Mugen Si Sedan will be available exclusively in Fiji Blue Pearl and include front and rear Mugen emblems. Inside, a Mugen Limited Edition placard is located on the center console along with a spherical 50 mm Mugen aluminum shift knob.

The name Mugen symbolizes Honda performance throughout Asia and around the globe. Mugen, under license by M-TEC Co., Ltd., of Japan, has been closely associated with Honda for more than three decades in the design and manufacture of racing and premium aftermarket performance products.

The limited-production vehicle (maximum of 1,000 units for the 2008 model year) will have a retail price of less than $30,000 when it goes on sale and include a full factory warranty. A prototype of the Honda Civic Mugen Si was shown at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in fall 2006.

Honda Civic Mugen Si Sedan Specs:
Engine Type = i-VTEC DOHC 4-cylinder engine

Pioneer, Canada’s leading builder of log homes has launched a range of premium homes in the UK – and buyers of one of these innovative and eco-friendly country houses will find a new “Jeep Wrangler Unlimited” parked on their driveway free of charge.

Pioneer Log Homes are renowned for their distinctive and unique log construction techniques which combine modern methods with traditional craftsmanship to create luxurious yet rugged Canadian dwellings.

Marcus Munro, Managing Director of Pioneer Log Homes UK says: “Our customers love the great outdoors and want a unique weekend hideaway that offers them the luxury of their Mayfair townhouse or Manhattan penthouse – in a stunning rural setting.

“Clients may be looking for a holiday home, in which to enjoy their country pursuits or a retirement home, but when they arrive at their weekender, they will want a fun and practical vehicle to get them to their favourite walking, fishing or bird-watching spot – and back again! The ‘Jeep Wrangler Unlimited’ is the perfect off-road vehicle for our cabin owners.”

Customers that buy ‘The Anchorage’ style log home from Pioneer in the UK this summer will receive a brand-new “Jeep Wrangler Unlimited” worth up to £23,000 free of charge. Their new car is the only four door convertible available in the UK, and offers a 2.8-litre diesel engine with manual or automatic gearbox, a removable hard top and seating for five adults and their luggage.

Peter Lambert, Managing Director of Chrysler Group UK, said: “With its excellent on and off-road performance, a host of safety features and an all-new interior, the Jeep Wrangler could become the limo of the off-road world. It is difficult to think of any other 4x4 that would sit comfortably alongside one of these stunning designs. I’m sure that these customers will enjoy owning their new Wrangler as much as their new log cabin.”

If you aren’t a millionaire you need not worry – Pioneer Log Home packages are available from just £650 per square metre, while the new Jeep Wrangler range starts at just £17,995.

Marcus Munro added: “The environment is an important consideration for our clients – from the sustainable forest where we source our wood to the geothermal heating systems for our log cabins, our approach is eco-friendly. When you look at the whole-life environmental costs of vehicles, the entire Jeep range is very environmentally friendly*, and the latest diesel-engined Jeep Wrangler is the greenest off-roader in its class.”
Another award as Citroen C4 Picasso passes 10,000 mark

As orders pass the 10,000 mark, Citroën’s innovative C4 Picasso has just received the Best MPV prize from Auto Express magazine, meaning that now almost every major motoring magazine has named the stylish people carrier as the very best in its class.

This virtual clean-sweep of the year’s major honours includes being named Family Car of the Year by Top Gear magazine as well as Best MPV by both What Car? and 4X4 & MPV Driver magazines. Not only did What Diesel Car? name the C4 Picasso their best MPV but also their outright Car of The Year winner.

“Citroen’s C4 Picasso is one of the most striking and handsome MPVs money can buy,” explained David Johns, editor of Auto Express. “It’s not only the contemporary look that makes it a deserving winner – it’s equally impressive inside, too. It’s packed with delightful design ideas and features that make life on board more entertaining – you name it, the C4 Picasso has it.”

Winning awards is one thing, but the 5 Seat C4 Picasso and the 7 Seat Grand C4 Picasso are also proving successful where it counts most – winning the hearts of buyers. Just a few months after launch, Citroën has taken its 10,000th order, outselling the Ford S-Max in the process.

The 10,000th customer was Dave Boustead of Exeter who had previously used a Citroën Dispatch van for his business. Mr Boustead said: “I was instantly impressed by the vehicle’s striking and distinctive design. It’s perfectly suited to my business, family and golfing requirements.”

Come August 19th, the C16 model line will grow from two models to three with the addition of the C16 Speedster announced today. Joining the Coupe and Cabrio versions of Callaway's Corvette-based supercar, the C16 Speedster is, in our eyes, the most equisite looking Callaway evar. It's appropriate then that the new open-air head scrubber will debut at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the poshest car show on the continent.

Like its brethren, the Speedster is motivated by a supercharged, though also intercooled, 6.2L V8, producing 700 horsepower and 660 ft-lbs. of torque. That appears to be about 84 horsepower more than one can order for a C16 Coupe or Cabrio. 0-60 takes just 3.2 seconds and the motor will finally surrender to the laws of physics around 210 mph. Going that fast with no windshield would be an adventure, for sure. Though the twin wind deflectors would push the rushing air up and over your (hopefully) helmeted head, there's a good chance you might be dining on a June bug or two for lunch. Callaway has incorporated some bumps behind the extra tall headrests, as well, which hopefully support the car's weight should you find yourself upside down on the tarmac. Considering the C16 Speedster will cost $305,000 USD when it goes on sale in the fall, owners will hopefully not be driving in a way where upside down antics are a possibility

PRESS RELEASE:

CALLAWAY C16 SPEEDSTER SET TO MAKE WORLD DEBUT AT 2007 PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS d'ELEGANCE

Flagship Model in C16 Line Offers High-Speed Motoring in its Purest Form, Features Jet-Fighter Styling, 700HP Hand-Built Powerplant, Unrivaled Exclusivity

OLD LYME, CONNECTICUT (July 23, 2007) – Callaway Cars today announced it will unveil the C16 Speedster, the third and flagship model in the C16 lineup, on the concept lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, August 19, 2007.

The made-to-order C16 Speedster represents a pinnacle in American supercar design. The supercharged and intercooled 700 horsepower Callaway exotic produces class leading power, a topless ****pit with twin wind deflectors and extended headrests, exquisite bodywork and race-inspired chassis tuning. Much like its spiritual predecessors, the 1990 Callaway Speedster and 1998 C12 Speedster, the latest C16 Speedster offers a visceral open air driving experience unlike any other.

"This is Callaway Cars' most exquisite vehicle to date," said company founder Reeves Callaway. "The C16 Speedster marks our 20th anniversary with Corvette and 30th year in business, and having this statement of our passion for the automobile featured on the concept lawn at Pebble Beach is a high water mark for us."

The C16 Speedster was penned and modeled by Paul Deutschman, architect of the "Callaway look" and designer of the original 1990 Callaway Speedster. Every body panel has been redesigned to speak to style and aerodynamics, and a hand-tooled German leather interior adds exclusivity. Door sills, the steering wheel and dash area all carry signature Callaway badging. Each Speedster is tailored to the buyer's specifications, including interior and exterior colors and a personalized build plate.

Underneath the car's stunning bodywork lies the heart of a racecar. The Callaway supercharged, intercooled, 6.2L all-alloy hand-built powerplant produces 700hp and 660lb-ft of torque, propelling the Speedster from 0 to 60 in an estimated 3.2 seconds. Maximum velocity of the C16 Speedster is over 210 mph.

Overall handling and road feel is transmitted by a newly developed Callaway/Eibach Multi-Pro coil-over suspension system. This joint development effort produced an advanced spring/damper system, featuring 10-position compression and rebound adjustability, allowing the driver to customize settings for specific road conditions.

A unique element the Speedster shares with its C16 siblings – Coupe and Cabrio – are Callaway/Dymag Carbon wheels that weigh approximately 40-percent less than the lightest aluminum wheels, significantly reducing unsprung weight for improved acceleration, cornering and braking. These TUV- and DOT-tested wheels feature forged magnesium spiders surrounded by carbon fiber rims and measure 19" x 10" front and 20" x 13" rear. Residing behind the wheels is a Callaway / StopTech brake system, which utilizes 6-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers gripping 355mm x 32 mm rotors.

The Callaway C16 Speedster will be available for purchase in the Fall of 2007 and starts at $305,000 USD. Speedster No.1 of the series will be delivered to its new owner at Pebble Beach.

The Callaway C16 Speedster is built by Callaway facilities in California, Connecticut, and Germany and is available for purchase exclusively through Callaway Cars' authorized dealer network. Callaway C16 components are also available individually for 2005 - 2007 Corvettes through Callaway authorized retailers and installers.
